He inherited "Colstoun". Entered politics as a Liberal member for Durham from 1875 until the turn of the century. H H indulged in lavish hospitality and the money flowed too easily and so "Colstoun" had to be sold in 1902. He proved a very great member of parliament. He had a lot of country opened up - roads made, bridges built.
